{"id":21192,"date":"2016-04-08T21:38:18","date_gmt":"2016-04-08T19:38:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geostru.eu\/?p=21192"},"modified":"2016-04-21T10:22:16","modified_gmt":"2016-04-21T08:22:16","slug":"shear-check-for-retaining-walls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.geostru.eu\/en\/blog\/2016\/04\/08\/shear-check-for-retaining-walls\/","title":{"rendered":"SHEAR CHECK FOR RETAINING WALLS"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shear check for retaining walls<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The check sections of the stem and footing of retaining walls are verified to shear without transverse reinforcements to shear (brackets, pins, bent bars) in general for massive structures but also for the purpose to simplify the execution on site.\u00a0The computation of the shear check is based on the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(1) V<sub>Rd<\/sub> \u2265\u00a0 V<sub>Ed\u00a0\u00a0<\/sub><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The shear resistance V<sub>Rd<\/sub> is as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(2) V<sub>Rd<\/sub> = {0,18 \u2219 k \u2219 (100 \u2219 \u03c1<sub>l<\/sub> \u2219 f<sub>ck<\/sub>)<sup>1\/3<\/sup> \/ \u03b3<sub>c<\/sub>\u00a0 + 0,15 \u2219 \u03c3<sub>cp<\/sub>} \u2219 b<sub>w<\/sub> \u2219 d\u00a0 \u00a0\u2265 \u00a0( v<sub>min<\/sub> + 0,15 \u2219 \u03c3<sub>cp<\/sub>) \u2219 b<sub>w<\/sub> \u2219 d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In essence the shear strength depends strongly on the effective height d of the section, but also on the concrete class\u00a0f<sub>ck<\/sub> and the rate of tensile\u00a0longitudinal reinforcement to deflection \u03c1<sub>l <\/sub>= A<sub>sl<\/sub> \/b<sub>w<\/sub> \u2219 d. In our case it is marginal or null the increment of the normal stress constituted by the term\u00a0 0,15 \u2219 \u03c3<sub>cp<\/sub> .<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The software <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geostru.eu\/shop\/geotechnical-software\/mdc-retaining-walls\/\">MDC<\/a> makes a\u00a0<span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\">first sizing of the bending reinforcements obtaining an initial <span class=\"\">value for\u00a0\u03c1<sub>l<\/sub>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If applying (2) the correspondent shear strength V<sub>Rd\u00a0 <\/sub>does not satisfy (1) further bending longitudinal bars are added increasing \u03c1<sub>l<\/sub> until a maximum of 1% (\u03c1<sub>l<\/sub> = 0,01). If with the 1% of\u00a0tensile\u00a0reinforcement the section is not verified to shear it is necessary to proceed with the increase of the effective height d of the section and\/or to the use of <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"short_text\" lang=\"en\">a <span class=\"\">concrete with<\/span> a higher <span class=\"\">characteristic resistance f<sub>ck<\/sub>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Generally the increase of the number of tensile\u00a0longitudinal bars <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\">occurs only in restricted areas that are in proximity of the convergence node of the stem <span class=\"\">with the foundation<\/span><span class=\"\">.
